Ayurvedic Head Therapies in Mysuru
Ayurvedic head therapies, called Shiro Chikitsa, use warm medicated oils on the head and scalp. In Ayurveda the head is treated as the seat of the senses and the mind, and these are some of the most relaxing therapies we offer. At Amay India in Mysuru we offer Shirovasti and Shiro Abhyanga (head massage), and Shirodhara as part of our rejuvenation therapies.
Shirovasti
In Shirovasti a tall cap, open at the top, is fitted snugly around your head and sealed at the base with a soft dough of black gram flour. Warm medicated oil, chosen by our doctor, is poured into the cap and held over the scalp for a set time while you sit comfortably. The oil is then removed and your head, neck and shoulders are gently massaged.
Why people choose Shirovasti
- Deep relaxation and a calmer, quieter mind
- Easing stress and the tension that builds up after long working days
- Better rest after demanding weeks
- Nourishing a dry scalp and the hair roots
Shirovasti is planned after a consultation, because the oil and the duration depend on your health.
Shiro Abhyanga: Ayurvedic head massage
Shiro Abhyanga is a head, neck and shoulder massage with warm herbal oil. It takes less time than Shirovasti, needs no preparation, and is a good choice if you want to unwind after work or add a head massage to a full-body Abhyanga.

Questions about head therapies
Is Shirovasti the same as Shirodhara?
No. In Shirodhara warm oil flows in a slow, steady stream over the forehead. In Shirovasti the oil is held still on the scalp inside a cap. Both are deeply relaxing; our doctor will suggest which one suits you.
How many sessions will I need?
If you simply want to relax, one session is fine. If you are coming for a health concern, our doctor may suggest a short course on consecutive days. You will know the plan before you book.
What should I do after the therapy?
Keep your head covered and avoid cold wind, a cold bath or a fan blowing directly on your head for the rest of the day. Our team will tell you when it is fine to wash your hair.
Who should not have Shirovasti?
It is usually avoided during a fever, a cold or heavy congestion. Tell us about any health condition when you book, and see a doctor first for any severe or lasting headache.
